YoungArts is a national scholarship competition for artists between the ages of 15-18. Disciplines supported are music, writing, acting, visual art, and dance. Each year, thousands of youth apply for the chance to receive an all expenses paid week in Miami where they have the opportunity to study under famed artists like Josh Groban and Carrie Mae Weems. Winners will also receive a cash prize of up to $10,000.

Heart of Los Angeles is a academic and youth enrichment program for youth in the Rampart Los Angeles neighborhood. The organization has three components: academics, arts, and sports with year-round programming. Programming goes from k-12 and there are scholarship opportunities for high schoolers involved in the organization.

Located in MacArthur Park, this arts organization and jobs training program offers free instruction for young adults 18-26. Classes include filmmaking, painting, guitar and figure drawing and run for four months at a time. The organization also offers career and college counseling for its participants.

This nonprofit provides 6-12th graders with free art classes with an emphasis on social justice. Current offerings include filmmaking, dance, photography, beach cleanup, and academic support. Classes meet once a week at a Los Angeles park. Interested youth may also apply for a ten month long Student Ambassador program that meets every other week and develops long-term creative projects making a difference in your community.

Free Arts delivers programs to children through ongoing partnerships with homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, housing programs, after-school programs and schools serving disadvantaged children in Los Angeles.

LACMA offerrs free membership to its museum to anyone ages 17 and younger. In addition to their free admission, each youth may bring one adult to accompany them to the museum for free.

Casa 0101 focuses on “Arts as a tool for civic engagement”. The theater highlights Latino stories through plays, and writer development programs. They also offer year-round free classes for youth in acting and writing, and seasonal classes in improv, filmmaking, puppetry, and dance. Another limited time program is the 10 Saturday session “Young Playwriting Program” which culminates in the production of a student-produced play. All participants receive a stipend for participating in the program.

This program offers free tickets to the opening night show of many plays put on by the Center Theater Group. The goal of this program is to encourage young adults under the age of 25 to discover theater. You may register to see as many plays as you would like.

This organization offers free year-round photography classes for teenage girls from low to middle-income families. It helps its youth share their visual depictions of their lives, as well as the Latin American experience throughout different areas. In the past they have had specific programs for girls dealing with depression and anxiety. Youth have also participated in programs documenting the experience of indigenous women in Central America. And for girls who want to pursue a career in the arts, they offer a  job training program “Hire Her”.

Founded by Mary Ellen Mann, author of From Pain to Power: Overcoming Sexual Trauma and Reclaiming Your True Identity, Last Battle is a creative space for sexual trauma survivors to share their artwork, stories, and poems in the site’s gallery.

There is also a blog for inspiration and recovery, Mann’s keynote speeches and talks, and a page of "ideas for living well" filled with advice for advocacy, recovery, and support. The site has a Christian slant and uses the metaphor of the princess warrior to explore recovery, and also includes exercises and articles on meditation and women’s empowerment.

This family-run museum was created in the neighborhood of Arlington Heights as a way to make contemporary art accessible to low-income people of color. The neighborhood had lacked museums, but its founder felt it necessary to expose his community to the arts in an approachable way. In addition to galleries, the museum serves as a community hub with free classes, artists lectures, yoga/meditation and other activities.

This program allows youth 13-18 to receive eight free tickets to popular and otherwise expensive theater productions in Downtown LA. This program requires an online registration, and group recap sessions with the other youth participants. Lunch is provided.

This program is co-created by the library system. Anyone over age 18 with a free library card is able to reserve tickets to a list of museums across Los Angeles. Some participating LA partners include the La Brea Tar Pits, Natural History Museum, Autry, and the Skirball. Each museum has its own rules on the amount of tickets you are able to receive and how often you can use this program.

This community-minded youth center offers case management, homework help, and a robust arts program. Youth interested in music (hip hop especially) have access to the center’s state of the art music recording studio and have released several collaborative albums. Additionally the center provides tutelage in film/video production and other types of art. This organization places a strong emphasis on celebrating the different cultures of its youth participants, with opportunities to explore dance, food, history, and so on through ethnic studies programs. There are also weekly gender specific meetings for male and female youth to talk to their peers about issues affecting them.

NaNoWritMo is a yearly challenge for writers to start and finish a full length novel during the month of November. This may seem like a daunting challenge, but there is a community aspect to the website. Writers can talk to each other about their works in progress and get advice. The site also posts videos of professional authors sharing tips. Additionally the young writers program offers resources for teens interested in taking on the challenge or just writing in general.

Wattpad is an online social storytelling platform that allows writers to share their work and possibly even get it published. There are many resources for honing your writing skills, and the ability to find new stories to read in all genres.

Located near Boyle Heights, WriteGirl offers free monthly writing workshops and one-on-one mentorship for girls ages 13 and up from October to June. Their program supports teens throughout the entire creative process including possible publication. Separately, the organization has also recently started a program for teen boys in LA called “Bold Ink Writers”.
